Our Construction Law Experience
Davagian Grillo & Semple LLP was formed in 2016 by three attorneys with a common passion for representing the legal interests of participants in the construction industry throughout New England. The partners in the firm each bring unique viewpoints and expertise that together form a solid foundation to advise and advocate for their clients. The attorneys at Davagian Grillo & Semple LLP are each actively engaged in industry associations and are trusted advisors to industry leaders.
John Davagian graduated with honors from Lehigh University in 1966 and with honors from Boston University School of Law in 1969 and proceeded to pass the Massachusetts bar exam. However, his career did not follow the expected path of an attorney, as he spent the next 28 years of his career as a construction executive. In 1997, he renewed his focus on law and in 2000 he founded a full-service construction law firm.
As vice president and then president of Sutton Corporation, a heavy construction company, Mr. Davagian managed the closely held family business. Sutton specialized in building bridges, piers and wharfs as a general contractor for public awarding authorities in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island, as well as for the General Services Administration, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the Department of the Navy. The company also acted as a subcontractor to numerous general contractors for the installation of all types of deep foundations, earth support systems and pile foundations for both public and private owners across New England.
Mr. Davagian has also represented clients in the realm of commercial and residential real estate development and land use. While serving as General Counsel to the Massachusetts Youth Soccer Association, Mr. Davagian represented this major nonprofit organization in its development of 283 acre parcel of land from land purchase, financing, design and permitting, through construction of a 16-field, state-of-the-art, soccer complex in Lancaster, Massachusetts, to the benefit of 185,000 children.
Prior to forming Davagian Grillo & Semple LLP, James Grillo was a trial lawyer for more than fifteen years at law firms in Boston, taking on construction cases of great significance to the Massachusetts and New England construction industries. Having particular expertise in prosecuting and defending lien and bond claims, James brings his clients litigation skills selectively tuned to the needs of construction contractors, subcontractors, suppliers, developers, and owners.
Scott K. Semple spent years at a Boston construction law firm where he was immersed in all facets of legal issues facing the construction industry, from negotiating with regulatory agencies to mitigating risk through careful contract drafting, to trying breach of contract cases and arguing appeals a the Commonwealth’s highest courts. At Davagian Grillo & Semple LLP, Scott prides himself on offering manageable solutions to help clients navigate matters that otherwise present themselves as a complex crisis.
